Gaudí and Domènech: the full picture of Modernisme
Catalan Modernisme was never the work of one man. Antoni Gaudí was its most radical genius, and Lluís Domènech i Montaner its great civil architect: the man who filled Barcelona with exposed brick, ceramic and stained glass, from the Palau de la Música to the Sant Pau hospital. This combo has one ace up its sleeve: Sant Pau sits at the end of Avinguda de Gaudí, the pedestrian diagonal that runs from the Sagrada Família. You can string all three together and take the metro only once.
1. La Pedrera at 9:00
Start on Passeig de Gràcia with the first slot of the day, the emptiest one. In 1.5-2 hours you'll cover the courtyards, the period apartment, Espai Gaudí and the rooftop. The seasonal opening hours have their own page.
2. Metro L5 to Sant Pau
From Diagonal, the blue line drops you at Sant Pau | Dos de Maig in about 15 minutes with no changes. The exit is right beside the Art Nouveau site.
3. Sant Pau at midday
Wander among the pavilions, step inside the Sant Rafael one and go down to the underground galleries that connected the hospital. Nothing feels rushed here: it's the most relaxed visit of the day.
4. Walk down Avinguda de Gaudí
The pedestrian avenue links Sant Pau with the Sagrada Família in a straight line, the basilica growing in front of you with every step. It's one of the best free photographs in Barcelona, with terraces to eat at before or after.
Tip: if you want to go inside the Sagrada Família on the same day, book its ticket separately and well ahead; the combo covers only La Pedrera and Sant Pau. Casa Milà - La Pedrera is at Passeig de Gràcia 92, on the corner with Provença, in the Eixample. The nearest metro is Diagonal (L3 and L5), a minute away; FGC Provença, buses 7, 22, 24 and V17 and Renfe Passeig de Gràcia (a 10-minute walk) also work. The daytime visit runs from 9:00 to 17:30; arrive 10-15 minutes before your slot.
The Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site stands at the far end of Avinguda de Gaudí, at the Sant Pau | Dos de Maig stop on the L5. From La Pedrera it's a direct 15-minute trip on the blue line with no changes: probably the easiest journey of any combo in this guide.
The neighbourhood plays in your favour: the Sagrada Família is a short walk along Avinguda de Gaudí, so this combo slots naturally into a "Modernisme day" covering early Gaudí elsewhere in your itinerary, Domènech i Montaner at Sant Pau and the unfinished masterpiece at the end. Few sightseeing days in Barcelona give so much for so little time on the metro.
